How to apply the Stonecem® Industrial mortar

With Stonecem® Industrial mortar, you can create both polished and troweled concrete finishes. Depending on the type of industrial flooring desired, the Stonecem® Industrial application system will vary. Below, we briefly explain both processes.

Application method for Stonecem® Industrial for polished concrete

Apply FIBRATOP® glass or metal fibres to reinforce the future polished concrete floor.
Pour the concrete onto the surface, leaving a thickness of 15 to 25 cm depending on the desired finish.
Level, screed, and vibrate accordingly.
Wait 30 to 45 minutes for the surface water from exudation to evaporate.
Brush the future polished concrete floor to eliminate imperfections, bumps, and depressions. Respect specific points like joints.
Sprinkle 2/3 of the Stonecem® Industrial industrial mortar and incorporate it into the concrete using mechanical trowelling. Apply the rest of the product and repeat the trowelling process.
Mechanically trowel the industrial floor once the industrial mortar has set and begun hardening.
Polish the floor until it achieves its characteristic shiny aesthetic.

Application method for Stonecem® Industrial for trowelled concrete

Use FIBRATOP® glass or metal fibres to strengthen the future troweled concrete floor.
Pour the concrete onto the surface, leaving a thickness of between 15 and 25 cm depending on the desired finish.
Proceed with the levelling, ruling, and vibrating of the substrate.
Allow 30-45 minutes for the surface water resulting from exudation to evaporate.
Trowel the future troweled concrete floor to remove imperfections, protrusions, and depressions. It is also essential to respect specific points and joints.
Sprinkle 2/3 of the Stonecem® Industrial Compact industrial mortar. Using mechanical trowelling, insert it into the concrete. Pour the rest of the product and repeat the trowelling.
Trowel the industrial floor mechanically until the industrial mortar has dried and hardened.
48-72 hours later, apply the Sealcem® DSV S30 curing lacquer using AIRLESS JOKER to protect the floor. Allow to dry and harden for at least 3 days before use.

Special precautions for Stonecem® Industrial industrial mortar

The ambient temperature should be between 5 and 30ºC, with no excessive wind.
The temperature of the substrate must not be lower than 5ºC or higher than 25ºC.
The properties of the concrete onto which our Stonecem® Industrial industrial mortar will be applied are entirely beyond our control. If there is no conformity certification, do not apply.
Excess or insufficient surface water in the concrete can lead to significant variations in the final properties of our industrial mortar.
The colour tone of our industrial mortar can also vary due to this excess or lack of surface water.
Once Stonecem® Industrial has been applied to the concrete, no water can be added to the surface.

Industrial mortar with electrosoldered corundum

Stonecem® Industrial Compact offers higher performance, an industrial mortar that includes electrosoldered corundum in its formula to provide an extra level of resistance.

This monolithic wear layer, which also serves to protect the new concrete substrate, is ideal for outdoor areas with vehicular traffic and car parks due to its high abrasion wear resistance. It is also suitable for industrial floors such as warehouses, factories, and storage spaces.

Available in 24 colours beyond the traditional grey, red, and green, it is used to create all types of industrial floors, especially those made from troweled and polished concrete. In addition to electrosoldered corundum, this industrial mortar contains quartz aggregates, Portland cement, highly stable pigments, and additives.

How to apply Stonecem® Industrial mortar with electrosoldered corundum

Similarly, our Stonecem® Industrial mortar with electrosoldered corundum is designed for both polished concrete and troweled concrete floors. Depending on the finish you want to achieve, the application procedure will vary. Below, we will explain both methodologies.

Application method of Stonecem® Industrial Compact for polished concrete

The substrate must be in optimal condition before pouring the concrete. The application surface must be a reinforced concrete slab or screed according to the regulatory specifications.
Add FIBRATOP® glass or metal fibres to reinforce the new polished concrete floor.
Proceed with pouring the concrete, ensuring a thickness of approximately 15 to 25 cm.
Level the floor and carry out the ruling and vibrating.
Allow a drying period of between 30 and 35 minutes, until the surface water evaporates completely.
Perform a mechanical floating with the help of trowels to remove imperfections, protrusions, and depressions. It is crucial to respect any specific points and joints.
Sprinkle 2/3 of the Stonecem® Industrial Compact industrial mortar. Then, using mechanical trowelling, gradually introduce the product into the concrete. Sprinkle and apply the rest of the product. Trowel continuously until the desired finish is achieved.
When the industrial mortar has completed its setting and is beginning its hardening process, trowell the industrial floor mechanically.
Polish the floor until a shiny finish is achieved.

Application method of Stonecem® Industrial Compact for trowelled concrete

Add FIBRATOP® glass or metal fibres, which will prevent possible cracks and fissures in the new troweled concrete floor.
Add the concrete to the substrate, ensuring a thickness between 15 cm and 25 cm. The final thickness will depend on the desired finish by the client.
Carry out the levelling, ruling, and vibrating of the substrate.
Wait between 30 and 45 minutes for the substrate to dry completely and there are no signs of surface water from exudation.
Eliminate imperfections, protrusions, and depressions from the substrate. To do so, trowel the future troweled concrete substrate. It is essential to respect specific points and joints.
Now is the time to apply our Stonecem® Industrial mortar with electrosoldered corundum. Sprinkle 2/3 of the product and insert it into the concrete using mechanical trowelling. Repeat the procedure with the rest of the product.
Allow the industrial mortar to dry and harden. Then, trowel the floor.
Proceed to seal the new troweled concrete floor. Between 48-72 hours later, apply the Sealcem® DSV S30 curing lacquer with AIRLESS JOKER to protect the substrate. Allow a period of 3 days before use to ensure the resin has dried and reached its maximum performance.

Special precautions for Stonecem® Industrial mortar with electrosoldered corundum

To apply this industrial mortar under optimal conditions, the ambient temperature must be between 5-30ºC, with no excessive wind, and the substrate temperature between 5-25ºC.
The concrete poured onto the substrate before applying our Stonecem® Industrial mortar with electrosoldered corundum must have conformity certification. If not, do not pour.
Excessive or insufficient surface water could significantly alter the final strengths of our industrial mortar.
This scenario would also cause changes in the final colour of the floor.
No water can be added after applying Stonecem® Industrial Compact.

1. What is industrial mortar?

Mortars are an essential element in the construction-decorative sector. Depending on the methodology used in their manufacturing, there are different types of mortars, with industrial mortar being one of the most requested.

Industrial mortar is a prefabricated construction material used in building and renovation projects. Generally, it is composed of a mixture of cement, sand, and specific additives, and it is employed to cover surfaces, join construction elements, or carry out repairs. The formulation of the mortar can vary depending on its use, providing high adhesion, durability, and resistance to adapt to different conditions and types of projects.

2. What types of concrete can you make with this industrial mortar?

Our industrial mortars are distinguished by their ability to achieve both polished concrete and troweled concrete finishes. Depending on the application system, the result will be one or the other.

Troweled concrete

This is a type of concrete obtained by smoothing its surface with a tool called a power float. This process helps level and smooth the concrete, creating a more uniform and compact surface, ideal for industrial pavements, garages, or warehouses. The finish has a smooth yet slightly rough texture, which improves the adhesion and durability of the pavement.

Polished concrete

This type of concrete is obtained through a polishing and buffing process using specialised machinery. After pouring the concrete, it is sanded and polished several times until a completely smooth, shiny surface with an aesthetically appealing finish is achieved. It is ideal for commercial interiors, residential areas, or high-traffic zones, as it offers excellent resistance and an elegant finish.

3. What is the curing process for industrial mortar?

The curing of industrial mortar depends on the characteristics of each manufacturer. In our case, both the Stonecem® Industrial and Stonecem® Industrial Compact wear layers require a total drying time of between 48 and 72 hours.

4. What is the thickness of industrial mortar?

Between 1 and 2 mm for the wear layer thickness.

5. Which industrial mortar is best?

We do not have a better or worse industrial mortar, but rather different types. The professional’s choice will depend on the product’s properties and the finish they are seeking. In this sense, Stonecem® Industrial Compact has higher mechanical resistances due to the inclusion of electrosoldered corundum in its formulation.

6. Which industrial mortar should I buy?

Buy the industrial mortar that best suits the specific needs of the project and client in question.

7. Why does industrial mortar crack?

The strength of industrial mortar is unquestionable. However, it is true that sometimes small cracks may appear in the industrial pavement. If this occurs and the concrete appears visibly damaged, it will be caused by one of the following three errors in the application of industrial mortar:

Not compacting correctly.
Not using glass fibres, metal fibres, or mesh to reinforce the support.
Not executing the necessary expansion joints and their respective cuts.

8. Is industrial mortar fireproof?

Our industrial mortar is not fireproof as such, but its reaction to fire is Class A1. That is, it is combustible but not flammable.

9. What is the price per m² of industrial mortar?

One of the benefits of industrial mortar is that the decorative finish achieved with its use is very economical compared to other systems. Approximately, the price per square metre ranges from £13 to £45 euros, including product and labour costs.
